In 2025, the first beta version of a Grasshopper plugin for 3D knitting applications will be published as part of a publication at AUTEX 2025. It includes advanced 3D knitting algorithms and opens up new possibilities for the design and prototyping of flat knit products. All Grasshopper plugins will be made open source on GitHub and released for testing.
The integration of algorithmic approaches into design processes raises fundamental questions: How can digital tools be used in such a way that they generate creative, innovation-promoting and economic added value? In which contexts do they complement or extend established methods and when do they prove to be indispensable?
Using the example of algorithmically supported 3D knitting, I explore how digital materialities, tools and processes can not only transform existing design methods, but also open up new aesthetic and functional possibilities. The aim is to critically examine and redefine the interface between traditional craftsmanship, digital technologies and creative innovation.
